You can download the song here, proceeds go to relief efforts in Haiti.

3 Dead in Alabama

Another unfortunate school shooting in Alabama, at the Huntsville campus.

More Recalls: Toyota Tacoma

Toyota has touted its trucks as being tough. Apparently, they are not so tough:
Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) will recall 8,000 pickups due to possible cracks in a common drive shaft component that Ford Motor Co (F.N) and Nissan Motor Co Ltd (7201.T) said posed no safety risk to their vehicles.
Toyota is getting torn apart right now. This is tremendous to watch.

Video of the Day: Jon Oliver at the RNC Meeting

This is hilarious.

Obama is Michigan's Commencement Speaker

I was excited until I saw this:
When speaking at commencement, Obama will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
Just utterly disappointed with my university.

Damage Done

A 15 year old girl was jumped and beaten in a Seattle Bus Tunnel. She had gone to security seeking help, but didn't get any:
"When faced with a clear and immediate threat of bodily harm, the Security Officer must always first consider retreating with any other people present to a secure position. When necessary to protect self and others from a clear and immediate threat of bodily harm, a Security Officer must use only the degree of force necessary to repel an attack or threat of an attack."
The whole ordeal was caught on tape

As a result, the security guards are expected to do more in the future:
Desmond believes the new performance demands will require more training. "Some of their employees may decide, 'This job is not for me; I may be putting myself at risk,' and it will be time for them to move," he said.
Changes to be made:
"When faced with a clear and immediate threat of bodily harm, the Security Officer must always first consider retreating with any other people present to a secure position. When necessary to protect self and others from a clear and immediate threat of bodily harm, a Security Officer must use only the degree of force necessary to repel an attack or threat of an attack."
They can make all the changes they want, but the damage is done.

Still Life

A man was rescued 27 days after being trapped in the rubble caused by the earthquake in Haiti:
The family of Evan Muncie reportedly told doctors at a Port-au-Prince hospital yesterday that the 28-year-old had been trapped in the wreckage of a market since the quake.

His apparent recovery is all the more remarkable as the Haitian government declared an end to search and rescue operations on 23 January, 16 days before Muncie was reportedly found.
A very sick story.

Video of the Day

I'm going to try and have a video of the day from now on.

This is something I saw on the Daily Show, which I thought was absolutely hilarious. It's from a while ago though:

Iranium?

Iran is drawing fresh sanctions following the announcement that they began higher enrichment of uranium:

The US wants sanctioning stepped up as a result:
TEHRAN (Reuters) - The Pentagon said on Tuesday that the United States wanted a U.N. Security Council resolution "within weeks" to tackle Iran's nuclear programme as Iran said it had begun making higher-grade nuclear fuel.
Things could get very interesting as this story develops. Shep's Universe will follow this one closely.

Thank You Puxtasawney Phil!

More snow on the way:
This storm is a confluence of two big low-pressure systems that are on track to collide off the North Carolina coast and then turn north, bringing heavy snowfall that will continue into Wednesday. Samenow said Virginia and the District might get 6 to 10 inches, while Maryland could receive as much as 14. High winds -- perhaps gusting to 50 mph -- might topple trees and take down power lines just as service was being restored to tens of thousands of customers.

The National Weather Service predicted late Monday that 12 to 16 inches of snow would fall in the District and its nearby suburbs by Wednesday. The prediction was expanded early Tuesday to 10 to 20 inches. A little less snow was expected in Fairfax County, the weather service said. Snow was expected to start falling Tuesday afternoon and become heavy overnight, amid fierce winds.
Even parts of the Midwest appear to be targets of this storm:
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for northern Illinois, and is forecasting accumulations of from 12 to 14 inches of snow by Wednesday morning.
I am not looking forward to when this snow gets to Michigan. We seem to have avoided all big snow storms thus far this year. This would be the biggest.
